silent wishes of a geisha

Geisha

I have often thought how beautiful the geisha was upon my eye. The delicate white skin and painted scarlett lips. Pretty tinkling garments in swept up hair. Those stunning robes and immaculate manners.

The romance of the 1800's Japanese culture and music is something that i have always been attracted to. Old and modern kungfu movies such as House Of Flying Daggers, Hero, Kung Fu Hustle, crouching tiger hidden dragon,

Im also interested in the political history of Japan and china. The royal history and how the economy and trade influenced who has been in power. How the countries have risen and fallen in turn, the relations broken and defined by trade and geographical position. It all fascinates me. I am keenly interested in how the young people were incited to riot by Mao's manipulation and what happened to families and the governments infrastructure as a result of his reign.

Woven into all this interest is a keen romantic side of me, that veers towards the melancholy. I have been writing sad dramatic poetry that is slightly depressive for a few years now. My mother used to write to and i found a little little book when i was quite young under her bed. The verses were all short rhyming poems, sad and full of frustration and heart ache. She never did anything with her poems, but i feel that she was a big influence on my work now.

This particular piece is about a young teacher in her late 30's. She is a spinster and lives in Japan, although she isnt a Geisha her life has mirrored that of one. Her job and family commitments to her sick parents have kept her from finding love. She was once kissed by a man that she greatly desired. In her lonely existence she held on to that kiss and all it promised her in that moment. I will let the reader ponder on what happened to the man and what his thoughts and intentions were.

What better character that the geisha to mirror unrequited love, the poignancy of not being able to have which you so badly desire. This poem hopefully portrays the sadness of the characters woeful pining.

Eyes that bled love he denighed

hurt held tight,

behind smiles reeking pride

gauze covered heart

the humming birds wing

here we meet again

in a place we've never been

you stole a kiss

that lost my heart

so im sitting here

reminissing

of all i've let go

of what we've been missing

a to bright sun

that still couldn't burn the moon

scarlett smiles that didnt touch lips

or turn the corners of my mouth northwards

where the ink blue of night meets pale grey of dawn

ill be waiting for you

in the tangled rays of gold

and the frosted shadows of milk

under the cherry blossom thats shed all petals

its twisted limbs jagged and univiting

waiting for ghosts that won't come

to the cheery silence of my thoughts.
